On May 13, President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev received United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Diene Keita, who arrived in Uzbekistan on an official visit.
At the beginning of the meeting, the head of UNFPA conveyed the sincere greetings and warm wishes from United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres to the President of Uzbekistan.
The parties discussed current issues of cooperation with this major UN institution in the field of population development.
It was noted that in recent years, cooperation between Uzbekistan and UNFPA has reached a qualitatively new level. Important projects have been implemented in the areas of reproductive health, gender equality, and demographic sustainability. The Fund took an active part in conducting the first population and agricultural census in the history of Uzbekistan.
The sides highlighted the positive results achieved in strengthening maternal and child health, supporting young families, and protecting the rights and opportunities of women.
An agreement was reached to further deepen cooperation, including the implementation of new joint initiatives under the country program and the holding of high-level events in Uzbekistan and at UN platforms.
