Objectives in the railway sector determined

27.05.2025

On May 27 President Shavkat Mirziyoyev got acquainted with the presentation on measures for the railway sector development.

In accordance with the decree of the Head of State dated October 10, 2023 major reforms are being carried out in this sphere. The joint stock company “Uzbekiston temir yullari” has undergone a structural transformation: non-core assets, adjacent land plots and unnecessary functions have been reduced. As a result, the company earlier working with losses, has completed last year with the profit amounting to 47 billion soums. The effectiveness of using cargo wagons has increased two-fold after creating “Temiryoʻlkargo” company.

Nevertheless, the industry's potential is far from being exhausted. During the presentation, tasks to develop infrastructure and increase revenues were outlined.

In particular, the opportunities for transportation of transit cargo are not fully utilized. If the volume of such transportation is increased by 40 percent, it is possible to double revenues in the coming years.

For example, freight trains were launched for the first time on the China-Türkiye route. New trains are being brought into the country, and the number of trips is growing every year. In this regard, the need to gradually increase the capacity of the railway infrastructure was emphasized.

This issue is especially relevant in the suburbs of Tashkent. Currently, 70 percent of external cargoes pass through “Chukursoy” station, which sometimes leads to multi-day delays, additional costs and queues.

In this regard, it is proposed to move freight stations outside the capital and build large stations in Yangiyul district and near New Tashkent. It is also planned to build a bypass line “Ozodlik - Gulistan”. This will allow doubling the volume of freight transportation without entering Tashkent.

Among the new projects is the Samarkand-Urgut railroad line. Currently, 7 kilometers of rails have already been laid. The total length of the line will be 54 kilometers, 2 railway stations and 2 freight stations will be built on the territory of the economic zone “Urgut”.

Special attention was paid to the issues of simplifying access to the territory of the stations, improving the quality of services provided. The necessity of creating convenience for movement, improving conditions for tourists and expanding parking lots was noted.

Reports of responsible persons on plans to purchase electric trains and improve the quality of railway service were also heard.
