Another important event was held as a part of the Tashkent International Investment Forum - the groundbreaking ceremony of a new thermal power plant (TPP) in the Angor District of the Surkhandarya Region.
President Shavkat Mirziyoyev has focused on the economic efficiency of the future station.
The total cost of the project is $1.2 billion. The plant with a capacity of 1,560 MW will generate 12 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity per year. The latest technologies, which will be provided by the TPP, will save 1 billion cubic meters of natural gas per year.
This will be the first TPP in Surkhandarya and the largest TPP built in the country in recent years. It will create great opportunities for realizing the enormous economic potential of the region.
For instance, in the Surkhandarya Region, there are more than 100 deposits of oil, gas, coal, precious and non-ferrous metals, many types of decorative stones that have not yet been developed. Therefore, in the next five years, it is planned to implement more than 5,000 investment projects for $7 billion in the region.
The electricity generated by the station will also provide electricity to 500 thousand households in the Surkhandarya Region. Moreover, it will be possible to export at least 3 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity per year to a neighboring Afghanistan.
The project is being implemented as part of a public-private partnership between the German Siemens Energy, the French IDEF and the Dutch Stone City Energy. The President has paid a special attention to this, noting that the industry opens up wide opportunities for the participation of private capital.
«In recent years, we have implemented major reforms in the energy sector and are completely transforming the industry. In particular, for the first time ever, the broad opportunities have been created for the participation of the private sector in the production of electricity. Over the recent three years, 5 power plants with a total capacity of more than 1,000 megawatts have been put into operation through public-private partnerships. The volume of foreign investments attracted exceeded $1 billion», Shavkat Mirziyoyev said.
Currently, 19 power plants with a capacity of 9,000 megawatts are being built in the country. Their total value is more than $10 billion.
The President expressed his gratitude to the heads of international financial institutions and companies that took part at the event and confirmed that Uzbekistan fully supports projects with foreign investment.
The President of Siemens Energy Christian Bruch and the Executive Director of IDEF Beatrice Buffon highly appreciated the progress of modernization of Uzbekistan’s energy system using advanced technologies. They have expressed support for the reforms being implemented under the leadership of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, as well as their readiness to further participate in such projects.
Then President, having pressed a symbolic button, launched the construction of a thermal power plant.
The station is scheduled to be operational by the end of 2024.
