The summit of the Commonwealth of Independent States continued with an expanded-format meeting, attended by President of the Islamic Republic of Iran Masoud Pezeshkian as a distinguished guest.
President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev outlined the priorities of the country’s upcoming Chairmanship of the Commonwealth of Independent States in 2027.
In his address, the Leader of Uzbekistan thanked his counterparts for supporting the decision on Uzbekistan’s CIS Chairmanship in 2027 and noted that it provides an opportunity for the country to contribute to the common work, put forward new ideas and jointly advance areas that are particularly important for the CIS countries today.
“Next year we will focus on issues that deliver clear and tangible results. These are the economy, new technologies, transport, security, education, science and human capital development,” President Shavkat Mirziyoyev emphasized.
This approach is reflected in the motto of Uzbekistan’s Chairmanship: “The CIS – a space of trust and common development.”
Work on the Concept of the Chairmanship and the Action Plan is now being completed, with more than 100 specific events already included.
The President outlined the priorities and mechanisms for practical work during Uzbekistan’s Chairmanship.
Particular attention will be paid to political dialogue within the Commonwealth.
“Today, when the situation in the world is becoming ever more complex, it is extremely important to openly and constructively discuss any issues, to hear one another and to seek solutions that suit all of us,” Shavkat Mirziyoyev noted.
In the economic sphere, the President proposed focusing primarily on industrial cooperation, noting that CIS countries possess significant production capabilities, resources, technologies and markets.
“If we combine this potential, create joint production facilities and build sustainable supply chains, the result will be far more noticeable for all participants,” the Leader of Uzbekistan stated.
In this regard, further removing barriers to trade between the countries will be a key priority.
President Shavkat Mirziyoyev also highlighted digital technologies as a separate area, emphasizing the importance of expanding their use beyond sectors where they are already well developed.
“We need to look ahead and work together in the areas on which the competitiveness of our economies will depend in the coming years. It is about critical minerals, artificial intelligence, robotics, new materials and modern energy technologies. These are the areas where we can’t afford to fall behind and we need to build our own competencies and joint projects,” the President of Uzbekistan stated.
The Head of State identified transport as another priority of Uzbekistan’s Chairmanship, noting that Central Asia is becoming an increasingly important transport hub between East and West, North and South.
“We need to make full use of these opportunities. To this end, it is important to simplify transit procedures and create routes that will be convenient, safe and economically beneficial,” the President noted.
Ensuring security and stability will also remain a key area of cooperation during Uzbekistan’s Chairmanship.
“We will support the work of the relevant CIS bodies and the efforts of our countries to counter common threats. We are talking about terrorism, extremism and cybercrime. All these threats have long since transcended national borders,” Shavkat Mirziyoyev stated.
The President also emphasized the need to combat growing cybercrime, which directly affects citizens, businesses, banks and government systems.
Human ties, which largely determine the stability of interstate relations, were highlighted as a key priority.
The Leader of Uzbekistan emphasized the importance of providing students, young professionals, scientists, researchers and representatives of creative professions with more opportunities to communicate, learn from one another and work together.
“At the heart of all our work must remain the individual, their dignity, their interests and their opportunities. Only then will the CIS be perceived as a space where one can study, work, create new projects, find partners and build one’s future,” Shavkat Mirziyoyev noted.
In conclusion, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev reaffirmed Uzbekistan’s firm intention to use its Chairmanship of the Commonwealth to preserve effective practices while giving additional impetus to areas where new solutions are needed.
The Leader of Uzbekistan thanked President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov for the hospitality and excellent organization of the summit.
Following the summit, a package of agreements and decisions was signed on priority areas of cooperation within the CIS.
