Presidents of Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan hold third meeting of Supreme Interstate Council

23.08.2026

President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev and President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev held talks in a narrow format and co-chaired the third meeting of the Supreme Interstate Council at the Kuksaroy Residence.

The leaders discussed further deepening the strategic partnership and allied relations between Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan.

The President of Uzbekistan particularly emphasized that the current state visit of the President of Azerbaijan marks a historic milestone.

“The signing of the Treaty on Eternal Friendship following the summit will reaffirm this. Most importantly, every aspect of our strategic partnership and alliance is being translated into concrete, tangible results,” President Shavkat Mirziyoyev stated.

The leaders noted the dynamic development of bilateral relations. Close contacts have been established between the parliaments, governments, and relevant ministries of the two countries.

As part of preparations for the visit, meetings of the Intergovernmental Commission and the Business Council, as well as the Forum of Regions, were successfully held.

Over the past five years, bilateral trade has tripled. Cooperation projects are being implemented in energy, the chemical, mining and textile industries, agriculture, urban development, and other areas.

The potential to increase bilateral trade to $1 billion was noted. The adopted Program, which sets out specific measures to achieve this important milestone, will provide a solid foundation for reaching this goal.

New cooperation projects will be launched during the meeting. The importance of actively attracting funds from the Joint Investment Company to support such initiatives was noted.

The leaders emphasized the need to strengthen connectivity between the two countries and jointly develop the Middle Corridor.

They also agreed to continue active exchanges in culture, education, youth policy, and sports.

Today, the new building of the National Pedagogical University named after Nizami Ganjavi will be inaugurated, and construction of Azerbaijan Park in New Tashkent will be launched.

To further strengthen ties between the two peoples, it was proposed to produce a joint film entitled “A Literary Bridge between Nizami Ganjavi and Alisher Navoi.”

This autumn, Azerbaijan will host the second Forum of Rectors of leading universities.

In 2027, the two countries will host a major sporting event – the FIFA U-20 World Cup. In this context, a large-scale “Two Countries – One Championship” program will be developed, featuring joint sporting, cultural, and youth events.

The heads of state also exchanged views on the international and regional agenda.

The co-chairs of the Intergovernmental Commission presented their reports.

Following the meeting, the two sides decided to adopt a roadmap to ensure the timely and effective implementation of the agreements reached.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the leaders launched joint projects in banking and finance, construction materials production, education, the oil and gas sector, tourism, housing construction, mining, and agriculture.
