On April 1, President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev received UN Tourism Secretary-General Shaikha Nasser Al Nowais.

The talks focused on further expanding multifaceted and long-term cooperation between Uzbekistan and this specialized UN agency.

The head of the Organization highly praised the large-scale reforms underway in Uzbekistan’s tourism sector. Consistent efforts are being made to modernize infrastructure and diversify tourism services. The geography of air connectivity is expanding, new museums are being established across the country, and major cultural events are held regularly.

It was particularly emphasized that over the past eight years, the number of tourists visiting Uzbekistan has increased sixfold, reaching nearly 12 million. By 2030, it is planned to raise this number to 20 million and increase tourism’s share in the country’s GDP to 7 percent.

The growing dynamics of cooperation between Uzbekistan and UN Tourism were noted with deep satisfaction. In 2023, the Organization’s General Assembly was successfully held in Samarkand, the International Academy of Tourism was established, and the “Tourism on the Silk Road” Thematic Office is expected to open soon.

At Uzbekistan’s initiative, a UN General Assembly resolution was adopted declaring 2027 the International Year of Sustainable and Resilient Tourism.

During the meeting, both sides reaffirmed their readiness to further develop partnership, including improving the international legal framework in tourism, implementing joint projects, expanding expert and technical cooperation, and training highly qualified tourism professionals.
