Prospects of developing the agriculture industry in Syrdarya region reviewed

05.05.2025

On May 5 President Shavkat Mirziyoyev held a meeting on organizing agriculture in Syrdarya region based on new approaches.

Although Syrdarya region is not large in area, it has significant agrarian potential. The main sown areas are located along rivers and canals, the infrastructure is favorable for the development of the agrarian sector.

At the meeting, the results of the study conducted in the districts were analyzed, new proposals and plans were considered.

Proposals were made on cultivation of crops with consideration of soil and climatic conditions, increasing the yield of wheat, vegetables and potatoes in steppe districts.

In particular, it is planned to repair irrigation networks and return 20 thousand hectares of land to agriculture within two years.

There are great opportunities for implementation of food projects. Thus, in Akaltyn, Gulistan and Bayaut districts it is planned to launch three large cattle-breeding complexes on 9 thousand hectares, introduce new technologies of cotton cultivation on 7 thousand hectares.

Today there are 10 thousand hectares of orchards and vineyards in the region. However, more than half of them are outdated both in terms of varieties and agro-technologies, and the grown products are not in demand in the market. Therefore, it is planned to renew 2 thousand hectares of orchards, focusing on export-attractive varieties, and the remaining plots will be transferred to interested entrepreneurs.

This year the project on reconstruction of 607 kilometers of inter-district canal “Ung Tarmok” and transition to digital control will be completed. This will give water saving by 35-40 percent and improve water supply on 27 thousand hectares.

The Head of State approved the proposed measures and gave specific instructions to increase crop yields, provide employment in agriculture, meet domestic demand for food, develop processing and expand export potential.
