On the sidelines of the Samarkand Climate Forum, the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev held a meeting with the Under-Secretary-General of the UN, Executive Secretary of the Convention to Combat Desertification, Ibrahim Thiaw.
The high guest conveyed to the President of our country the sincere greetings and best wishes of the UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
Issues regarding the further development of cooperation with this authoritative UN body in the fight against desertification and land degradation in our country and the region were reviewed.
The UN representative highly praised the President of Uzbekistan's speech at the forum, noting the relevance of the initiatives put forward to address climate challenges and the timely presentation of the "green" development concept for Central Asia.
It was noted with satisfaction the unanimous approval by the UN General Assembly in August of the resolution initiated by Uzbekistan on forest restoration, as well as the commencement of the development of national goals to prevent land degradation.
An agreement was reached to involve experts from the Convention in the creation of an International Scientific Network for combating land degradation and desertification based at the "Green" University in Tashkent.
