On July 1, the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev held a meeting with the Secretary-General of the United Nations António Guterres, who is on an official visit to our country, at the "Kuksaroy" residence.
At the outset of the conversation, the UN Secretary-General expressed sincere gratitude to the head of our state for the invitation to visit Uzbekistan and the warm reception extended to him.
Warmly welcoming the distinguished guest, the leader of our country noted that this current, second visit of A. Guterres to the republic underscores the comprehensive support of the UN for the irreversible reforms being implemented within the framework of the "Uzbekistan-2030" strategy.
During the negotiations, issues of ensuring global and regional peace, stability, and sustainable development were discussed, as well as further expanding multifaceted cooperation between Uzbekistan and the UN, progress in implementing joint projects aimed at achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
The intense dynamics and exceptionally high level of cooperation were noted with deep satisfaction. 140 joint programs and projects are successfully being implemented. In the past year alone, at the initiative of the Uzbek side, 10 special resolutions of the UN General Assembly have been adopted.
Five Deputy Secretaries-General of the UN have visited Uzbekistan since the beginning of the year. Last month, our country was elected to the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and the Administrative Council of the International Labour Organization. A representative of Uzbekistan has become a member of the UN Human Rights Committee for the first time. Another UN specialized agency, the International Fund for Agricultural Development, has opened its representation in Tashkent.
Significant international events with a global agenda are jointly held, particularly addressing food security, tourism development, poverty alleviation, climate change mitigation, and biodiversity protection. The 43rd UNESCO General Conference will take place in Samarkand next year.
Views were also exchanged on current international and regional issues. The President of our country expressed strong support for the initiatives of the Secretary-General in ensuring international security and stability, reforming the UN and its principal organs, and hosting the Future Summit in New York City this year.
Issues of cooperation in enhancing transport connectivity, ensuring food, energy, and information security in the region were discussed.
The evolving situation in Afghanistan was also discussed, emphasizing the necessity of expanding humanitarian aid to the Afghan people and developing a consolidated strategy of the international community towards Afghanistan.
Following the meeting, an agreement was reached on the joint development of a Framework Cooperation Program with the UN for Sustainable Development Goals in Uzbekistan for the years 2026-2030.
