The President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, accompanied by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, visited historical monuments in the Ichan-Qala complex and the Nurullabay Palace in the ancient city of Khiva.
Ichan-Qala, also known as the "open-air museum," is the only preserved monument city in Central Asia. It contains more than 120 architectural monuments.
In 1990, the city of Khiva was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, and in 1997 it celebrated its 2500th anniversary. In 2020, the city was declared the cultural capital of the Turkic world, and in 2024, the tourist capital of the Islamic world.
The Nurullabay Palace was built in the early 20th century. The complex includes a madrasa, over 100 rooms and galleries. The palace apartments were designed not only by leading Khivan masters, but also by foreign artist-decorators who introduced elements of European Art Nouveau style into the decoration. The ceremonial halls are adorned with fireplaces, Venetian mirrors and bronze-gilt chandeliers with crystal pendants.
Stories of Khiva’s history and its contribution to the development of science, as well as the rich culture and art of the region, made a great impression on the Kazakh guests.
