On September 19, the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev met with the Director-General of the World Trade Organization Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala on the margins of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly.
During the meeting, the sides discussed ongoing efforts on Uzbekistan’s soonest accession to the WTO.
The Head of our state emphasized the importance of joining the Organization, including in view of medium- and long-term development goals.
The President of Uzbekistan focused on the preparation of the next meeting of the Working Group, as well as strengthening the capacity and raising the qualifications of the specialists involved in the process.
The WTO Director-General highly assessed the measures taken by Uzbekistan on the country’s accession to the organization.
Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala expressed the WTO Secretariat’s full support to Uzbekistan’s efforts, as well as confidence in the country’s accession in the nearest future.
As a result of the meeting, an agreement was reached to speed up the next meeting of the Working Group, improve the qualifications of specialists and assist in harmonizing legislation with WTO agreements and rules.
