On April 1, the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev received the Speaker of the Milli Majlis (‘National Assembly’) of Azerbaijan Sakhiba Gafarova who is on her official visit to Uzbekistan.

The Chairperson of the Milli Majlis Sakhiba Gafarova thanked President Shavkat Mirziyoyev for a warm welcome and conveyed greetings and best wishes of President Ilham Aliyev.

At the meeting, it was emphasized that the common historical roots, language, religion, culture, traditions and values serve as a basis of the strategic partnership of the two countries. Relying on this solid foundation, the tangible results are achieved in the development of bilateral cooperation in recent years.

A progress is being achieved in all spheres of interactions – economy, politics, inter-parliamentary relations, culture and social sphere. There are intensive contacts, exchanges of official delegations, representatives of business and civic circles at all levels.

Despite the pandemic, the trade turnover has grown fourfold in recent years. Since the beginning of the year, the trade has increased by 25%. More than 200 joint ventures have been established.

This positive dynamics was also facilitated by the establishment of a close and multifaceted partnership between the parliaments of Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan. In order to continue the development of interactions, it is necessary to strengthen systematic and regular cooperation between the legislative bodies of the two countries.

Along with this, the parliaments, as direct representatives of the Uzbek and Azerbaijani peoples, should play a key role in promoting «public diplomacy», including the consolidation of ties between the regions of Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan as well as the support for economic and humanitarian projects.
