President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev arrived on May 15 in the Syrdarya region.
Worth reminding that as a result of the partial collapse of dam at the Sardoba reservoir earlier, on May 1, the nearby mahallas and crop fields got flooded. The head of our state immediately arrived at the scene and personally monitored the works to stabilize the situation.
The incident caught 2,570 individual-design houses and 76 apartment blocks destroyed in Sardoba, Mirzaabad and Akaltyn districts of the Syrdarya region. In addition, 1,781 individual units and 52 multi-storey buildings were partially flooded. 70 social, industrial and services facilities, about 20 thousand hectares of agricultural land, 828 kilometers of roads, power, gas and water supply networks as well as communications were damaged.
In the face of a grand test, our nation has manifest cohesion, solidarity and compassion. About 90 thousand residents of 28 mahallas in the Sardoba, Akaltyn and Mirzaabad districts were evacuated to safe areas owing to swift operation.
The refugees are provided with basic necessities. Karakalpakstan, all other areas of the country, as well as ministries, associations and the wider public transferred sponsorship funds to Syrdarya, sent building materials, foods, clothing, medicines and household items.
During the previous trip to the region, the head of state set the task not only to restore, but also to improve the life of the local population, build new housing, social facilities and create new jobs, and instructed thus relevant officials.
Today, the Government Commission is working in this direction. Great efforts and funds have been mobilized for the restoration and repair of damaged houses, for the return of people to their restored homes, to assist them in reviving life, restore infrastructure and protect public health. Employees of the ministries of emergency situations, internal affairs and defense, as well as the National Guard, are working on this front.
To date, damaged houses and streets of about 20 settlements have been cleared, the remains of water been removed from 13 mahallas.
Life in these areas is gradually returning to normal. About 66 thousand people have returned to their homes. In other places, cleaning and repair work is in full swing.
President Shavkat Mirziyoyev visited the Sardoba district and got acquainted with the work underway, examined the houses being repaired, talked with people.
For residents whose houses have become completely unsuitable for living, it is planned to build 3 residential quarters in Mirzaabad, Sardoba and Akaltyn districts with 66 five-story houses for 2,640 apartments.
In particular, 37 multi-storey buildings with 1,480 apartments will be built in the Dustlik mahalla of the Sardoba district. The head of state today laid the first stone of the new quarter.
