The Ashgabat Summit of the Commonwealth of Independent States continued with negotiations in extended format.
The heads of state and government addressed a set of issues aimed at further expanding the multilateral cooperation, exchanged views on international and regional matters of common interest.
In his speech, Shavkat Mirziyoyev expressed gratitude for supporting the decision on the presidency of the Republic of Uzbekistan in the Commonwealth in 2020 and noted that the priority of our country’s chairmanship will be the consistent enhancement and amplification of the effectiveness of multilateral cooperation within the CIS.
Uzbekistan’s leader proposed to expedite the adoption of a new Concept for Further Development and the Commonwealth Economic Development Strategy through to 2030.
Particular attention will be paid to ensuring the full-fledged operation of the free trade zone, to deepening the production cooperation and exploring the markets of third countries, developing mutually beneficial forms of interaction, implementing innovative, scientific and educational programs.
The head of our state noted the importance of devising Priorities for the Promotion of Transport and Transit Corridors and the Concept for Interregional Cooperation for a ten-year period.
The first Forum of the CIS Regions is expected to be held in Uzbekistan next year, and it is also proposed to organize a regular meeting of the Council of Heads of CIS Chambers of Commerce and Industry and, under its auspices, the Week of Business Initiatives of the Commonwealth.
Events related to information security issues are also planned as part of cultural and humanitarian cooperation.
Following the talks in the extended format, heads of delegations signed documents. A decision was reached to pass chairmanship in the CIS in 2020 on to the Republic of Uzbekistan. The participants inked also the Declaration on Strategic Economic Cooperation, and the Appeal of the Heads of CIS Member States to the peoples of the Commonwealth and the world community on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Victory of the Soviet people in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945, the 2020-2022 Program of Cooperation in the Fight Against Terrorism and Other Violent Manifestations of Extremism, as well as other documents.
